Plot Summary
One year has passed on Abydos since Daniel left with SG-1
to attempt to find his wife, Sha're. As promised, her father, Kasuf, has
unburied their Stargate and awaits Daniel's return. Even if he hasn't found
her, Daniel at least wants to go back to assure Kasuf that he is still in search
of her---and what has become of her since her abduction. Hammond has no
objections to Daniel's trip---but O'Neill and Carter have obligations elsewhere:
They are expected, by the President, in Washington for a medal ceremony. Daniel
is sure he'll be safe enough on Abydos with Teal'c accompanying him, and the
general agrees. "Say hi to the President for me," Daniel tells Sam
and Jack before his departure.
Kasuf is waiting to greet Daniel, though
he's momentarily startled by the Jaffa accompanying his son-in-law. Daniel
apologizes for returning without Sha're---and is shocked when Kasuf leads him to
a nearby tent that is occupied by Sha're herself! Perhaps not a shocked,
though, as when he sees that his wife is pregnant.
Daniel and Teal'c react with suspicion to the Goa'uld Queen. Kasuf,
unaware that his daughter has been taken as a Goa'uld host, is confused by their
reaction---and their insistance that her presence presents a danger. Sha're
pleads with her husband to believe her: Her Goa'uld, Amaunet, has made itself
dormant because Sha're is pregnant. If the Goa'uld awakens, it will cause the
baby to be stillborn. Daniel's sudden realization---she is saying that
Apophis' host is the father of the child---starts Sha're crying for shame.
There is more. Apophis has hidden Sha're on Abydos in an attempt to hide her
pregnancy and the reason he wants the child: He wishes his host's son to one day
become his *new* host. Daniel is stunned and appalled by the revelation.
In
Washington, Hammond, O'Neill, and Carter attend a gathering of military
personnel and political figures. Sam remembers her two years spent in Washington
trying to make the Stargate Project a reality; Jack muses that he can find his
way around the galaxy, but he always gets lost trying to find his way around
D.C. Sam has her own surprise family reunion---her father is in attendance.
After
Daniel leaves Sha're's tent, heart-broken Sha're muses that "Daniel no
longer loves me." Teal'c corrects her: "Daniel Jackson cares for you
greatly." Sha're recognizes him, and Teal'c admits he was present during
her implantation with the Goa'uld and apologizes for his part in that. Sha're
knows more---Teal'c is the traitor. She realizes she has the memories of her
Goa'uld host...and that Apophis' place among the System Lords is no more
(partially due to Teal'c).
Teal'c speaks to Daniel. He has sympathy for
his friend's grief, but there is strategic benefit to take Sha're back to Earth.
While her Goa'uld sleeps, Sha're has acces to its genetic memories. Daniel is
outraged by the suggestion. Hasn't Sha're been through enough?! He won't put her
through interrogation. Teal'c is angered by that. Does Daniel feel sorry for
Sha're or himself? If Sha're stays on Abydos, she'll give birth, Amaunet will
retake control of her, and Apophis will take Sha're and the child and leave
Abydos forever. Is that the fate he wants for her?
Jacob Carter and
his daughter are having an awkward reunion. Jake manages to be proud and at the
same time baffled by Sam's receiving her Air medal honor---esp. since her work is
'analysis of deep space radar telemetry'. Even Jack's good humor makes no
impression on Carter senior. When Hammond and Jack excuse themselves from the
awkward conversation, Jake turns to Sam, "Just between us, your cover
stories could use a little polish." Sam professes ignorance, and her
father doesn't press the issue. Whatever she's *really* studying in Cheyenne, he
tells her, can't be as exciting as the opportunity he's arranged for her: A
position in NASA and the chance to travel into space for real.
Jake
isn't the only one who senses a secret. Outside, O'Neill is being followed by a
mystery man.
Daniel speaks to Sha're, reassuring her that he doesn't
hate her and that she's done nothing that needs his forgiveness. Sha're is still
ashamed. Daniel hates what Apophis has done, what he has planned, but loves
Sha're. "Will you stay?" Sha're asks him. "I can't---because I
want you to come home with *me*," he tells her.
Sam politely hears out her father's plans to get her into the shuttle
program. He's called in favors to get her priority in getting into the
program. Sam tries to explain, without revealing the truth about the Stargate
project, that she is happy with her work now. "It's not your dream,"
Jacob says, baffled by her refusal. When Sam accuses that he wants her in NASA
more for him than for her happiness, Jacob gets angry and excuses himself.
Jack
has found his way to a nearby bar, where the mystery man confronts him. "Colonel
Jack O'Neill, right? You are one hard man to find," he tells Jack. "Who
are you?" Jack asks. "Armin Selig, I'm a journalist." O'Neill
tries to leave, and Selig asks if he's on his way back to the Stargate...and is
not fooled by Jack's playing dumb. Selig has taped Jack and Sam's earlier
conversation about her time working on the Stargate Project and his travel
around the galaxy and plays it for the colonel. Selig has a source who has
told him about the project and wants confirmation. Jack shrugs it off and says
that the C-5 he referred to while talking to Sam is an aircraft. What about
Sam's 'Stargate'? Selig questions. "You got me on that one," O'Neill
dismisses him, leaving the bar.
Daniel, Teal'c, Sha're, and Kasuf are
discussing what will happen if she returns to Earth. Sha're fears for the
child's safety when the Queen realizes what has been done, Kasuf fears for the
safety of his people when Apophis returns to find Sha're missing. Daniel
assures Sha're that he will be with her, keep her and the child from harm. If
they can find out what is making the Queen dormant, they may be able to find a
way to keep her in that state. As for the Abydosians, Teal'c suggests that Kasuf
simply tell Apophis that one of the Goa'uld's enemies has stolen Sha're and the
child. It will, after all, be essentially true. Kasuf tells Sha're to go with
Daniel. Daniel asks more politely. Sha're wants to know if she will be with
Daniel *after* the child is born, and Daniel admits she will be kept in prison
until the Goa'uld is removed. At least, though, she and the child will be safe
from Apophis. Sha're agrees to go with them to Earth.
Hammond is speaking to Jacob when O'Neill interrupts. He pulls Hammond
aside and informs the General of his conversation with the reporter. How much
does Selig know? Hammond wonders. He knew enough to identify and locate
O'Neill. In that case, Hammond agrees, they definitely have a problem.
Sha're,
Daniel, and Teal'c are almost to the Stargate when the ground begins to shake.
"A Goa'uld ship approaches," Teal'c says. The sound momentarily
causes Sha're's Goa'uld to awaken, thinking Apophis has come for her. Daniel
helps her fight the Goa'uld---but the damage is done. It has induced Sha're's
labor. Daniel and Teal'c lead Sha're away from the Stargate into hiding only
moments before Jaffa and their Goa'uld master teleport down to Abydos. It is
not Apophis, but his enemy Hero'or and his Horus guards, who has come looking
for the Queen.
Hammond, Jack, and Sam are discussing containment of
their problem. The repercussions--domestic and international--would be
devastating if Selig printed his story about the gate's existance. Sam also
wonders who Selig's 'source' could be. It seems unlikely that anyone at SGC
could be the leak. Senator Kinsey's (see 'Politics') name comes up, but Hammond
points out that civilians sign non-disclosure statements and Kinsey could be
prosecuted if he revealed information about the Gate. Hammond wants to know
how much Selig knows, he tells Jack.
Sha're is in labor, with Daniel
helping. Teal'c has recognized Hero'or and knows he has come for the child.
Daniel won't leave Sha're, so Teal'c must do what he can to keep Hero'or's
soldiers away from the two of them. Sha're smiles at Daniel. "You do love
me," she realizes happily.
Jack finds Selig, and the reporter
guesses that the colonel has come to find out how much he knows about the
Stargate. Selig doesn't need Jack's confirmation to run the story, but he
wanted to meet the colonel anyway, he says. Jack will be a hero when the story
breaks. Cool, says Jack, what's Selig going to say about him. Selig gives up
and lets O'Neill know the facts he's found---everything from the purpose of the
gate to the number of teams travelling around the universe to the fact that Jack
is leader of the team SG-1. "Wow. That's pretty amazing," Jack teases.
Selig also knows that the teams are searching for alien technology to off set
the cost of the project, and that two alien ships were destroyed---by Jack---on
their way to attack Earth. O'Neill advises him not to go through with the
story, still refusing to confirm Selig's information. "If you're going to
go ahead with it, I want to make sure you get one thing right---it's O'Neill
with two 'L's'. There's another Colonel O'Neill with only one L. He has no
sense of humor at all." Selig isn't put off by Jack's teasing. "The
story's going to run, Colonel." "It'll read like science fiction,
Armin." "You can't stop me." "I know that, too." "You
don't think anyone will believe it." "I'm sure someone will."
Selig storms away....only to be struck down by a car when he steps
into the street. O'Neill rushes to help the dying reporter. "You did
this," Selig gasps. "No, I didn't do this," Jack insists. And
then Armin is gone.
Hero'or's men have confirmed the Queen's presence, but have not found
her. Kasuf is interrogated by the Horus. Teal'c rescues him moments before he's
murdered.
Meanwhile, the medal ceremony has been cancelled. Sam finds
her father, trying to smooth things over with him. Jacob has another surprise
for Sam---a bad one: He has lymphoma. He was hoping to stick around long enough
to see Sam become an astronaut, something she wanted her whole life. He wants
to see her fulfill her dreams before he dies. Sam is sorry, but she still can't
accept the position at NASA. Jacob is disappointed. Sam begs him not to leave
with hard feelings, but cannot stop him.
Nor can Sha're stop the birth
of Apophis' child, even though she is terrified that when her Goa'uld awakens,
she will lose Daniel again. Daniel promises that she will never lose him, the
Goa'uld will never take away what they have. Then the baby is born...and
Sha're's Goa'uld retakes control. "Give me the child!" she demands.
Teal'c, disguised as a Hero'or's Horus guard, fools the Queen by pretending to
kidnap the baby (with Daniel playing along). "Apophis, my Pharoh, will
destroy you both for this!" Amaunet promises before Teal'c stuns her with
a blast of the Zat gun. "We must go," Teal'c tells Daniel.
Daniel takes the baby boy to Kasuf, admonishing him to take the child
into hiding. Kasuf muses that he may never see his daughter again now. Daniel
promsies that Sha're is strong and will not give up...and neither will Daniel.
At
SGC, Hammond presents Sam and Jack with the Air medal in honor of their
preventing the Goa'uld attack on Earth (see 'Serpent's Lair'). After the
ceremony, Jack has a private word with Hammond. "It *was* an accident,"
Hammond answers the unspoken question. "Yes, sir," Jack says, not
looking convinced.
Still in disguise as a Horus, Teal'c takes his
'prisoner' Daniel to Hero'or, introducing the human as one of the Tauri, the
enemies who defeated Apophis. Hero'or scoffs at that claim. Daniel suggests an
alliance between the Tauri and Hero'or. Hero'or promises that the humans are
nothing and one he has conquered Apophis, he will conquer them. "You will
serve me," he vows. "No, I don't think so," Daniel answers. The
impudence enrages Hero'or, who is about to execute Daniel when the Stargate
begins to open. Apophis has returned for his Queen, Hero'or thinks. One Horus
is caught in the Gate vortex and killed. Teal'c uses the distraction to
dispatch another Horus, but is wounded by a shot from a Zat gun. Sam and Jack
emerge from the gate into the middle of the fight. Jack tries to shoot Hero'or,
who puts up his shield (see 'The Nox') to deflect the bullets. "You dare
challenge me?" Hero'or growls. "Was thinking about it," Jack
quips...then throws a knife. The slower-moving object passes through the shield
and buries itself in Hero'or's hand. "You'll pay for this insolence!"
Hero'or vows before teleporting back to his ship, leaving SG-1 alone in the
pyramid's gate room. "Someone explain to me what just happened,"
O'Neill asks Teal'c and Daniel. "Is is a lengthy tale, O'Neill, "
Teal'c says.
The Stargate begins to open again. This time, it *is*
Apophis returning for his Queen. The team, including confused O'Neill and Sam,
hide. Sha're joins Apophis, who asks after the child. She tells him that
Hero'or has stolen the child. "Forgive me, my Pharoh, for failing you."
Apophis takes her hand, "Come home with me, my Queen." He never sees
Sha're look sadly to the corner where Daniel is hiding. With that, Apophis and
Sha're step back through the Gate.
"You all right?" Jack asks
Daniel. "No, no I'm not. But I will be," Daniel says. Teal'c points
out that Sha're knew where they were hiding and did not betray them. On that
note of hope, SG-1 returns to Earth.
