Plot Summary
The SGC is on alert as an unscheduled traveller comes
through the Stargate. However, the traveller *does* have an Iris code---SG-1's
code, and no one is more surprised to hear that than the SG-1 team themselves.
There's only one other person who knows the SG-1 code: Master Bra'tac (Bloodlines,
Serpent's Lair). Hammond and SG-1 greet the Jaffa. Bra'tac has come
bearing bad news for Teal'c: Drey'auc, Teal'c's wife, is safe, but his son,
Rya'c, has been taken away by Apophis.
The news surprises Hammond and
SG-1, who believed that Apophis and Skaara/Klor'el had been killed when their
ships were destroyed (Serpent's Lair). Bra'tac explains that they
escaped through their ship's on-board stargate before the vessel exploded. So
what does Apophis want with Rya'c? Hammond wants to know. Teal'c
knows---Apophis wants the traitorous Teal'c. Together, Bra'tac and Teal'c
explain that Apophis' has been shamed by his defeat at the hands of the humans
and needs to reassert his authority and power among the people of Chulak before
the System Lords have him killed and replaced. Hammond immediately nixes the
notion of a rescue attempt---he won't send his team into a trap. The team is
more confident: Apophis' current situation makes him vulnerable and they are
aware of his trap. Plus, Bra'tac still has allies among the Goa'uld's guards.
"Teal'c, you originally withheld information about your family because you
were afraid it would make you vulnerable. Now it has. I want this to be the last
time," Hammond warns. With that, he approves the rescue. "Get Apophis
if you can, but the Prime Directive of this mission is to bring Teal'c's family
back to Earth."
The team uses canisters of gas to dispatch the Jaffa guarding the
Chulak gate. Bra'tac leads them to Drey'auc's new home---a place expensive
enough that Teal'c questions how she can afford it. Bra'tac does not know.
Drey'auc greets him with an embrace and a look of sadness. She was alone when
Rya'c was taken, she explains. Then they are interrupted by the arrival of
Fro'tac, an apparent friend who greets Teal'c and the team. "I am Fro'tac
of the High Cliffs," he introduces himself. "Jack. Of the Windy City."
O'Neill responds. Teal'c expresses appreciation for Fro'tac guarding his wife's
home. Fro'tac clarifies: It is his home...and Drey'auc is now Fro'tac's
wife. Drey'auc had her marriage to Teal'c removed when it seemed that Teal'c
was dead and would never return to Chulak. Enraged by the news, Teal'c attacks
Fro'tac. The others intervene and Fro'tac apologizes that he wanted to be the
one to tell Teal'c in person.
Fro'tac and Drey'auc, with Sam
accompanying them to see what she can learn about the situation with Rya'c and
Apophis, leave the team alone. Bra'tac swears ignorance of the marriage---he
would have told Teal'c had he known. O'Neill is concerned only with Fro'tac's
trustworthiness. Bra'tac trusts him---but cautions that it would be wise to keep
an eye on the man, anyway. Teal'c is angry with Fro'tac, feeling betrayed.
Daniel points out that in a way, Fro'tac has helped Teal'c's family by giving
them a home and getting them out of the camps (Bloodlines). Bra'tac
points out that Teal'c cannot care for his family now, while he is branded a
traitor and unable to stay with them on Chulak. Before they begin planning
Rya'c's rescue, Bra'tac wants Teal'c's word that he will not kill Fro'tac.
Teal'c grudgingly agrees.
Bra'tac brings back Fro'tac and Drey'auc. "We
will find Rya'c and bring him home. This I swear....after that is done, I will
never lay eyes on you again," Teal'c tells Drey'auc.
Drey'auc follows Teal'c outside, expressing her own anger at her former
husband. How dare he judge her when he was the one to abandon his family. That
was for the future of his people, Teal'c defends himself. And what she did was
for the future of her family, Drey'auc answers. Does she love Fro'tac? Teal'c
asks. No, Drey'auc says honestly, but he offers their son a better life than
the camps.
Fro'tac knows where Rya'c is being held in the palace, the
west wing, and isolated section. After dark, the team and Bra'tac sneak into
the palace. They find Rya'c---who immediately runs from them, screaming for
help and resisting even Teal'c's efforts to contain him. The boy's shouts alert
the Jaffa guards, but the team is able to fight their way out of the
palace----without Rya'c. Bra'tac and Teal'c share the bad news with Drey'auc:
Rya'c's mind now belongs to Apophis. He's brainwashed, O'Neill says. Rya'c has
been turned against Teal'c as punishment for the Jaffa's betrayal of the
Goa'uld, Teal'c muses.
Their talk is interrupted as Apophis addresses
the people of Chulak. The rumors of his defeat are false, spread by traitors,
Apophis says. He brings truth---proof of his power to conquer evil and forgive
transgression. As proof, Apophis presents his 'most loyal subject'---Rya'c, son
of the traitor Teal'c. Rya'c denounces his father as a traitor to their God,
his people, his family. Apophis then offers a reward for Teal'c and those who
are helping him.
Teal'c, however, hears something in Rya'c's message that gives him hope:
Rya'c, in his plea for his mother's 'release' from her 'captors', misidentifies
her as 'Drey'auc of the Morning Cham'ka Groves', rather than the correct
'Drey'auc of the Cord'ai Plains'. Teal'c believes this is a secret message from
Rya'c, that Rya'c wants to meet his father in the Cham'ka Groves in the
morning---and that Rya'c is resisting Apophis' brainwashing. Bra'tac and O'Neill
point out that such cunning is a little beyond Rya'c's young age, but Teal'c is
adamant: His son is strong, he is fighting Apophis.
The debate is interrupted by the arrival of Jaffa soldiers, who have
come to search Fro'tac's house for 'the traitor' and SG-1. Drey'auc hides the
team while Fro'tac stalls the soldiers. Finding nothing, the Jaffas depart.
Fro'tac's protection of the team has finally earned him Teal'c's trust. Later
that night, Teal'c and Drey'auc are unable to sleep...and a romantic encounter
between them is observed by Fro'tac, who angrily sneaks out of the house----his
departure observed by O'Neill.
Jack follows Fro'tac to the palace in
time to stop him from leading a Jaffa to Teal'c and the team. When Fro'tac
ignores O'Neill's urgings to return to the house and repeatedly attempts to
alert the Jaffa guards, Jack reluctantly kills him. Their absence has been
noticed, and the team is waiting up when Jack (disguised in one of the Jaffa's
armor) returns. "No wonder these guys are always cranky," he
complains after opening the bulky helmet. Jack tells Drey'auc honestly what
happened to Fro'tac. She blames herself, "I made vows I could not keep."
The team heads for the groves Rya'c spoke of. Jaffa soldiers
blanket the area, guarding the boy, but the team dispatches them easily. Rya'c
cries, "Father!" and runs to Teal'c. Teal'c is pleased, but the team
is wary---wasn't the rescue a little too easy? Teal'c again defends that his
son is strong. Jack orders Carter to search the boy for any tracking devices or
other surprises like they found with Cassandra (see 'Singularity' and 'In the
Line of Duty'). Teal'c insists that Rya'c's Goa'uld larvae would allow no such
tampering. Jack remains unconvinced. They are not put at ease when they find
the Stargate only lightly guarded. "All right, Rya'c, what's the scam here?"
Jack demands. Why the change of attitude about Apophis? What has the 'God' got
Rya'c doing? When Teal'c protests, Jack gets upset. Apophis would not allow them
to escape this easily. The team debates possibile explanations for the easy
escape---and what to do with Rya'c. Do they risk taking him back to Earth or
leave him behind. Teal'c insists Rya'c will not harm them. Jack grudgingly
agrees to take Teal'c's entire family back to Earth. SG-1 dispatches the guards
at the Stargate and the group departs Chulak. Bra'tac stays behind, saying his
farewells to Teal'c.
At the SGC, Dr. Fraiser examines Rya'c---no signs of bombs or such
devices. Jack still wants to keep the boy under guard. Rya'c is eager to see
the Earth, and while he is smiling with joy, Drey'auc notices something about
her son which disturbs her. Privately, she tells Teal'c the problem: Before
his abduction, Rya'c lost two of his teeth while training with Master Bra'tac.
The two teeth which are no longer missing but restored to Rya'c. Teal'c tells
Dr. Fraiser, who, with his help, is able to sedate the boy. Rya'c puts up a
struggle, cursing them as 'Ha'taaka' before losing consciousness.
Rya'c is moved to a cell, where Drey'auc sits with him. He wakes and
attempts to escape. When he can't, he tries to trigger the weapons in his false
teeth, but discovers they have been removed. Inside the teeth, Dr. Fraiser found
two biological organisms which, when combined, would have been deadly. He
wanted to get outside to release the biological weapon into the
atmosphere---where it would have destroyed every living thing on the planet.
The physical danger past, the next problem is how to 'deprogram' Rya'c.
The boy remains in his cell, screaming for his father, the 'Ha'taaka' to take
him back to Chulak. Apophis is his God, Rya'c insists, Teal'c is a traitor. His
'God' loves him, Rya'c continues...despite Teal'c's argument that his 'God' was
going to let the boy destroy himself to destroy Teal'c and Earth. Apophis lied
to him, Teal'c says. Rya'c counters that Teal'c lied to him when he promised to
return to Chulak. Teal'c appeals to Rya'c's memories of his family---of their
life together on Chulak. *That* is love, Teal'c tells the boy. His words have
no effect.
Defeated, Teal'c leaves him and speaks to the team. Rya'c has reason
to hate Teal'c, the Jaffa admits, which is making Apophis' brainwashing that
much stronger. Does the team know of another way to help the boy? Jack offers
one idea---electroshock. Daniel balks at the 'barbaric' idea. Fraiser admits it
could be done less 'barbarically', under controlled circumstances, but isn't
sure about doing it on a child---esp. a Jaffa child. Teal'c asks if the
electroshock is similar to the effects of a Zat gun blast. A single blast from a
Zat gun would have the same painful effect, but would not kill Rya'c or his
symbiot.
The course of action agreed upon, Teal'c and Drey'auc
return to their son's cell. Rya'c is still cursing them and asking for Apophis.
"Forgive me, my son," Teal'c asks before tearfully firing the Zat
gun. The painful blast leaves the boy unconscious. They sit with him, Drey'auc
singing to soothe the boy. After a few moments, Rya'c begins singing with her.
He opens his eyes---and asks where they are. He beams at Teal'c, pleased his
father has 'returned home'. Drey'auc explains that they are no longer on
Chulak. But they are with Father, Rya'c says happily, so to the boy they are
home.
It is decided that Drey'auc and Rya'c will stay on the world
known as 'the Land of Light' (see 'The Broca Divide'). At SGC, they'd
essentially be prisoners, Jack explains before presenting Rya'c with a gift: A
baseball glove. The boy puzzles over the gift's purpose, even mistaking it for a
hat. Jack grins, guessing that he will have to visit and show the boy the
purpose of the glove. With last thanks and farewells, the family steps through
the Stargate...
