CASCADE: The Sentinel Soap Opera, Part 3
By Laura Picken

[Following a forty-five minute Presidential press conference (during which the President unequivocally denied ever having sexual relations with his wife, Monica Lewinsky, or anyone else) , we bring you to CASCADE, already in progress...]

Thanking God for every time she had been forced to run in high heels over twenty years on the lam, Naomi turns the corner, running straight in to the Cascade bicentennial celebration parade. She takes off the scarf around her neck and quickly ties it around her head, hiding her hair. Replacing her sunglasses, she moves quickly through the crowd. If the Cascade Pig Department can't help her, maybe the ATF can...

[cue John Denver music...which quickly switches to a dramatic instrumental] Meanwhile, back in the cave, the group is discussing their possible plan of attack, when Jim dramatically shushes them. Curious, Blair asks, "Jim? What is it?"

"Someone's coming, Chief."

Serena opens her mouth to ask how Jim could possibly know that, but Rafe stops her. He may be young, but he's been a part of Major Crimes long enough. Leaning over, he whispers into Serena's ear, "When Jim says someone's coming, someone's coming."

Serena almost blushes at the feel of Rafe whispering in her ear, then quickly sets those thoughts aside. Drawing her gun, she asks Jim, "Do you know who it is, Jim?"

Tilting his head, the sound goes completely silent. Before the gentle viewer wonders if it's something wrong with their TVs, though, the sound returns. Drawing his own gun, Ellison warns the group, "It's Lee Brackett. I don't know how, but he tracked us here."

[Cue commercials for Energizer, Tower Records and Blockbuster Video. We now return to our show...]

Our heroes are now lined up against the walls of the cave, guns drawn, ready for Ellison to give the word. After all, Lee Brackett is Lee Brackett, but he is still only one man...

Outside the cave, Brackett's cell phone rings, causing him to jump. The agent has to restrain himself from yelling as he answers, "Brackett!"

"What do you mean you LOST her?!?!?!" Jack Kelso is shifting uncomfortably in his wheelchair, wishing, not for the first time, that he could walk. It's times like these that he missed being able to pace a room. "Don't you realize how -important- she is? If the Delacordes get a hold of her, they can use her as leverage to get Brian and James. And that would not please the Ghost at all. You wouldn't want to be on the other end of that, would you? I didn't think so." After a few moments of silence which we can only assume is Kelso listening to his operative on the other end of the line, Jack replies, "Well, I don't care if you have to become Grand MARSHALL of the stinking parade, you find her! Am I making myself clear?" Frustrated, Kelso slams the phone back in its cradle and starts to massage the bridge of his nose with one hand. Sighing, he picks up the phone again, and as we hear it ringing...

The tense silence in the cave is only intensified by the hum of the low, dramatic background music. Whispering so the others can't hear him, Blair asks his Sentinel, "Is it just Brackett out there, Jim? Are there others?"

Jim extends his hearing out as far as possible without zoning. When we hear nothing of importance, Jim shakes his head. "Nope, it's just Brackett."

"But chances are it won't stay that way for long." Blair's eyes widen slightly as an old memory hits him. "Jim, do you think that tunnel you used to get out last time is still here?"

Jim nods his head. "Sure. I don't think the blast hurt it at all."

Blair smiles, and practically starts to bounce on his toes, even while crouched in a low position. It's taking all of Jim's self-control not to laugh. "What's going through that sick little mind of yours, Chief?"

Meanwhile, back in Agent Burton's office, the phone rings. With an exasperated sigh, she glares at the still-silent Simon as she answers, "Burton...yeah Jae, what have you got for me?" Quickly grabbing a pen and notepad on her desk, she writes down the information Jae's giving her over the phone and, for the first time that day, smiles. "Jae, I always knew you were the smart one of this partnership. Thanks!" Replacing the phone on the hook, Angela grabs her coat and hustles Simon out the door. Closing her office, she announces to the surrounding team, "We've found the location of the bonfire. Let's move, people!"

Meanwhile, back at the cave...Brackett inches closer and closer to the dark opening of the cave, thanking the inventor of the white noise generator every step of the way. Drawing his gun, Lee counts down to sneaking up on two and a half million dollars. "...three...two...one!"

Pointing his gun toward the cave entrance, Brackett's eyes widen as he realizes he has not found the Sentinel or his guide, but instead three members of the Cascade PD, all of whom were leveling their own weapons on him. Sighing, Lee demands, "All right, where are they?"

Roasting a marshmallow on a stick with one hand even as he held his gun with another, Taggert replies, "Where are who?"

Lee rolls his eyes. "Ellison and Sandburg - the two people who were -supposed- to be meeting you here?"

Joel mouths a silent "Oh," then replies, "They're right behind you."

Brackett never lowers his gun as he comments, "You've got to be kidding me? You really expect me to fall for that-"

The agent falls to a heap on the floor as Jim, Blair and Rafe show up behind him. The three other members of the group stand up quickly as their adversary falls to the ground. Serena is surprised to see Lee Brackett unconscious already. "How'd you do that, Jim?"

Jim shrugs. "A hit to the back of the head. Works every time." Kicking over his old arch enemy, Jim asks, "Joel, can I use your tie?"

Joes shrugs and wordlessly hands Jim the tie. Kneeling down, the Sentinel ties Brackett's wrists behind him and takes his weapon. Motioning to the rest of the group, he then insists, "C'mon guys, we need to get going." The tilt of his head indicating Jim is hearing something in the distance, Jim continues, "Company's coming, and we don't want to be here when they find him."

As Brown steps over the prone figure of Lee Brackett, he agrees, "I'd be hard pressed to argue that one..." but then thinks of something. "Wait! Shouldn't we find out what he knows? He's got to have found this place somehow."

Jim thinks over Brown's suggestion. "Good point." Turning to the biggest two men of the group, Jim asks Brown and Taggart, "Can you carry him?"

The two men nod, picking up the agent by the bound shoulders and feet. As they continue to move out, Joel (who has Brackett's feet) can be heard muttering, "Please, God, whatever happens, don't let this man wake up until we get him in the back of the Jeep..."

Meanwhile, back in Cascade, Simon, stunned and wondering how someone was able to access department files on Dawson Quinn, allows himself to be dragged down to the main lobby of the ATF building...where someone drags him away from the distracted Agent Burton and into a nearby supply closet...

Who's got Simon? Will Brackett talk? Where's Naomi? And will Tag and company be able to get Jim and Blair out of that cave before the Delacordes do? Find out in the next exciting episode of CASCADE!
